You skip 30% of the words when reading a text, according to Keith Rayner's studies on eye movement control. When we read, our eyes move in "saccades". These are rapid eye movements from one point of fixation to the next. We look at a point on the page or screen, gather all the information we need, then move to the next point of interest. For example, we typically skip over words like "the" and "and". So what does this mean for writing accessibly? Well, complex words with lots of syllables are hard to skip over. We typically have to spend longer focussing on them. We can't easily skim the text and pick up the meaning. In 2011, a government survey of adult literacy skills found that 14.9% (or 1 in 7) of adults in England have a reading age of around 9 to 11 years. Plus, many people simply have busy lives and don't have the time or capacity to read complex texts. So if you want to convey important information in a way that *everyone* can understand - keep your English plain and your sentences brief. #AccessibleWriting #CopywritingTips #FreelanceCopywriter #CharityCopywriter #SustainableCopywriter

Fresh back from a week's holiday in Hamburg! I have to say, for the first time in many years, I was feeling a little nervous about speaking German, as I haven't been to Germany for a while. I read and translate it often, but speaking is a slightly different skill, and I haven't practised much lately! But after the first couple of conversations it all clicked back into place and I was back in German mode. As well as rekindling my love for bakeries, wheat beer and bicycles, my time there gave me a renewed eagerness to do some more translation work. I found myself involuntarily looking at German slogans and thinking how I would translate them. Being based in the UK now, I've naturally ended up working with more UK-based companies and doing predominantly copywriting work. But I love translation and would welcome the chance to do more. I started my career in Hamburg. Back in 2013, my first job after university was proofreader at a translation agency over there. I feel very lucky to have had the privilege to spend time living and working abroad. And especially in such an amazing city. If you’ve been to Hamburg, you know what I mean! I haven’t been there for about 9 years, but my partner and I are taking a trip there in a couple of weeks. I can’t wait to be back and show him my old stomping ground. And polish up my German a bit!
