Sustainable brands: do you have a blacklist for sustainability terms?

When I create a brand tone of voice, I collaborate with the company to create a list of words to use and a list of words to avoid.

This helps ensure your company keeps to a uniform tone of voice across all communications.

But these lists are especially important for sustainability brands.

I often find that the following words get blacklisted in brand guidelines:

❌  Sustainable
❌  Eco-friendly
❌  Green
❌ Planet-friendly
❌ Carbon neutral

Instead, we put together a framework of very specific wording to talk about the client’s sustainability work.

Would you avoid any of the above words? If not, why not?

How do you write something that *actually* makes people want to buy from you?

One key thing is to make sure you talk about benefits, not just features.

So what does this mean?

Well, rather than just stating the facts of what you’re offering – think about what the benefit of it is to the customer. And articulate that.

So instead of:

❌ A one-hour consultancy call

Say:

✔️ One hour of undivided attention to help you work through your ideas and find clarity

Instead of:

❌  Made from Tencel

Say:

✔️ Made from strong, breathable Tencel to keep you comfy whatever the weather

Instead of: 

❌  3 extra drawers

Say:

✔️ 3 extra drawers so you can organise all your bits and bobs and keep your workspace clear
